“I Will Go.”

An old story goes like this. A king was looking to appoint an explorer of a newly-discovered land. He interviewed three men. The first said, “I cannot go unless you can guarantee me a soft, comfortable bed during the expedition.” The second said, “Unless I can bring along my wife and my dog for company, count me out.” The third said simply, “I will go.” The third man got the job.

So often when we try to bargain with the king, our efforts fail and we gain nothing in the process. Our attempts to keep ourselves safe and comfortable are the stuff from which our psychic prison bars are forged. We do this by playing small, being resentful, being lazy, being timid, and thinking the world owes us a living. But by behaving this way, who are we really helping to grow? Not others, certainly, and not ourselves, either. When we insist on having false promises of security and comfort, we limit ourselves. We keep ourselves well-fed and out of shape, even more fearful of going outside our mental cages.

Challenge yourself. Just for today, trust that whatever comes your way, you will deal with it courageously and with good humor. You don’t need promises, contracts, or soothing pacifiers from others. Be bold, for your freedom is up to you, and you only.

Enjoy your day!
